Food Menu On Kilimanjaro

A healthy food full of vital elements like proteins, carbs, and fats is necessary for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This is important for our customers as well as our committed mountain support team. Our talented culinary crew painstakingly prepares three healthy meals a day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—during the journey. These meals are expertly prepared with the freshest seasonal ingredients that are carefully chosen from Moshi’s local markets. The components include meat, chicken, seafood, fruits, veggies, and more. If your walk takes more than five days, we make sure you always have fresh supplies on hand to keep your team members energized and healthy while they’re high on the mountain.

Below is a sample of our menu during the climb.
Breakfast

Start your day with a variety of options, including fresh fruit juice and a selection of fruits. Enjoy cereal, porridge, and eggs prepared to your liking. You can also choose from slices of bread and toast with jam, margarine, and honey, along with French toast, pancakes, sausage, and bacon. Beverages include a range of teas, coffee, and drinking chocolate.

Snacks

Throughout the day, you’ll have access to a variety of snacks such as peanuts, crisps, popcorn, cookies, chocolate, and dried fruits to keep your energy up.

Lunch

Our lunch menu features sliced vegetables, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, and meat cutlets. Choose from a range of sandwiches including egg, cheese, tomato, tuna, meat, and peanut butter. You’ll also find macaroni with meat sauce and slices of bread to complete your meal.

Dinner: In the evening, enjoy a hearty meal starting with a soup of the day, followed by slices of bread and salads. The main course includes rice, pasta, potatoes, and a choice of roast or fried chicken, beef, or fish. We also offer curries, mixed vegetables, lentils, fruit salad, and fruit with custard. Teas, coffee, and drinking chocolate are available to round out your dinner.

Summit Night

During your ascent to the summit, we provide a midnight snack that includes juice, soup, hot chocolate, tea or coffee, and biscuits. Once you return to base camp, a well-deserved, hearty meal will be waiting to celebrate your achievement.

Dietary Preferences and Restrictions

We accommodate a range of dietary needs including vegetarian, vegan, kosher, and non-vegetarian options. You can specify your dietary preferences and restrictions on our booking form. For very strict diets, we recommend bringing some of your favorite “energy” foods, as sourcing specialty ingredients in Tanzania may be challenging.

Altitude Considerations

At high altitudes, appetite often decreases. To counter this, we focus on providing meals rich in “good” carbohydrates, as they are the most efficient fuel for optimizing performance and recovery at altitude. Carbohydrate-rich foods can help alleviate symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS) by enhancing ventilation and blood oxygenation. Our meals are designed to be both appealing and nutritionally supportive to meet your increased energy needs.

Quality and Dining Experience

We pride ourselves on the quality and variety of the food provided. Unlike some trekking experiences with dehydrated meals, we use only fresh produce. Our porters carry all the food up the mountain, ensuring a high standard of dining. Meals are served in well-equipped mess tents, which offer shelter from the weather. On pleasant days, we set up dining tables and chairs outside to take advantage of the stunning views. Our mess tents and camping equipment are top-notch, ensuring a warm, dry, and comfortable environment for dining and relaxation.
