Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park is a charming place located northeast of Arusha town and about 50 kilometers from Kilimanjaro International Airport. This almost magical setting is a wildlife paradise, with majestic Mt. Meru keeping watch over vibrant flamingos standing tall in the calm waters of Momella Lakes, graceful giraffes meandering across the open savannah, and black-and-white Colobus monkeys leaping effortlessly through the treetops.
Though Arusha National Park may be smaller in size compared to Tarangire or Serengeti, it is a treasure trove of natural beauty. Spanning an area larger than 77,000 soccer fields, the park boasts a remarkable diversity of ecosystems. From the towering heights of Mt. Meru, Africa’s fifth highest mountain, to the serene Momella Lakes in the northeast and the lush Ngurdoto Crater in the southwest, visitors can explore mountainous forests, open savannahs, grassy plains, and verdant rainforests, each teeming with an incredible variety of wildlife.
What to Do
Despite its small size, Arusha National Park offers a variety of activities that cater to different interests and levels of adventure. A game drive through the park’s diverse landscapes is a must, offering the chance to see a wide range of wildlife in their natural habitats. The park’s proximity to Arusha city also means that it can be explored in a half or full-day trip, making it a convenient option for those short on time.
One of the park’s standout features is the opportunity to embark on a walking safari. Guided by a knowledgeable park ranger, you can explore the park’s grasslands and forests on foot, getting up close and personal with the flora and fauna. This experience is both thrilling and educational, as it allows for a deeper connection with the natural world.
For those interested in more of a challenge, climbing Mount Meru is an exhilarating option. The trek to the summit of this dormant volcano offers spectacular views of Kilimanjaro, just 70 kilometers to the east, and the surrounding landscapes. The climb is less crowded than Kilimanjaro, providing a more peaceful experience while still offering a significant achievement for trekkers.
Canoeing on the Momella Lakes is another unique way to experience the park. Paddling through the tranquil waters, you can observe hippos, waterfowl, and other wildlife from a unique vantage point. This activity is especially popular with families and those looking for a more relaxed way to explore the park.
Wildlife Experiences
Arusha National Park may be small, but it punches well above its weight in terms of wildlife diversity. The park is home to a range of habitats, including lush rainforests, expansive grasslands, and shimmering lakes, each supporting its own array of species. One of the park’s highlights is the chance to spot the rare black-and-white colobus monkeys, which swing gracefully through the treetops of the park’s forested areas. These monkeys, with their striking coats and long tails, are a photographer’s delight.
The park is also famous for its large population of giraffes, which are often seen ambling gracefully across the savannah. Zebras, warthogs, and buffaloes are commonly spotted, and while the park doesn’t have large predators like lions, the absence of these big cats makes it a safer environment for walking safaris, a unique way to experience the African bush.
Birdwatchers will be in paradise at Arusha National Park. The Momella Lakes, a series of alkaline lakes within the park, attract a stunning variety of birdlife, including flamingos, herons, and fish eagles. With over 400 bird species recorded in the park, including both resident and migratory species, it’s a premier destination for avian enthusiasts.
